FORT LAUDERDALE:  Henderson Mental Health Center will unveil 40 units of permanent housing in Hollywood.  The Chalet Apartments, as the apartment house will be known, will celebrate its Grand Opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony that will take place on Friday, May 13th at 8:30 a.m.  Featured speakers will be Henderson CEO, Dr. Steven Ronik; District 6 Broward County Commissioner Sue Gunzburger and Hollywood Mayor Mara Giulianti.  Invited guests will also enjoy a continental breakfast buffet and cool jazz music, with tours of the new apartments provided by Henderson staff.

The project was funded by Broward County and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is known as a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Project.  All prospective tenants will be screened and must have a history of homelessness and treatment for mental illness.  Henderson will work with the Hollywood Housing Authority to ensure HUD compliance with the facility and all tenants.

Among the renovations were the installation of ceramic tile in each apartment, all new impact resistant windows and doors, as well as necessary electrical, plumbing and structural upgrades.  Broward Beautiful contributed $10,000 toward rejuvenating the landscaping, while Washington Mutual Bank donated $10,000 toward improving the six buildings on the property.

Henderson Mental Health Center offers Homeless outreach and Drop-In services to approximately 800 persons per year in addition to operating a variety of licensed residential facilities and community support to hundreds of others living independently throughout Broward County, in cooperation with various Housing Authorities and programs such as Shelter Plus Care and Section 8.

Henderson Mental Health Center is south Florida’s oldest and largest not-for-profit, behavioral healthcare provider serving more than 12,000 adults and 6,000 youth in 20 locations throughout Broward County.
