DESIGN STUDENTS MAKE-OVER FOSTER HOMES
FORT LAUDERDALE: Design
students at American InterContinental University have ‘adopted’ Henderson
Mental Health Center’s two youth foster homes. The class will design
interior makeovers for the bedrooms and kitchens of two single-family
homes, located in Margate and Lauderhill.
Each house is home
to six adolescent boys who will worked with the University’s senior
design class, under the leadership of Mr. Peter Cervone. Mr. Cervone
noted that, “This is a challenging project with obvious real-life
application. How we understand the boys’ needs and wants is critical
to the success of this term project. While not your typical clients,
this project will nonetheless challenge our young designers. This
project is an excellent way to synthesize and apply their design
studies and exercise their individual creativity.”
“We did not want
to limit the students’ ingenuity by assigning a specific budget,
so we told them don’t worry too much about, “ explained House Father,
Bob Berman. He added, “Just give me the ideas and we will find a
way to make it work.” They don’t know Bob otherwise there would
be no doubting his word. Bob has a reputation for drumming up support
for the homes, but is skilled at getting the most out of a buck. Skills
he imparts to his young charges who have a generous streak of their
own, often holding fund-raisers for those less fortunate than themselves. And
remember, we are speaking of boys in foster care!

Mental Health Center is a not-for-profit charitable organization,
