Summary of Key Outcomes and Accomplishments
Highlights of the most recently completed fiscal year include:

  • 47 behavioral health programs targeting every age group from infants to the elderly. Henderson Mental Health Center provides a continuum of high quality, community-based prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation services by utilizing best practice and evidence-based treatment models to maximize recovery.
  • Over 20,000 individuals served organization-wide at more than 20 locations throughout Broward County and one location in Lake Worth, Palm Beach, County.
  • 601,000 individual services provided to our clients that included: Psychiatric, Psychosocial, Residential, Medical, Case Management, Therapy, Substance Abuse, Co-occurring Disorders, Family Reunification, Homeless Prevention, Jail Intervention, Job Skills and services to improve birth outcomes for Pregnant Mothers and to reduce Infant Morbidity.
  • 7,353 individuals who experienced a psychiatric crisis received immediate emergency services at our Crisis Walk-In Center.
  • 2,267 individuals received immediate on-site assessment, crisis intervention, counseling, linkage, referral and inpatient hospitalization as necessary from our twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, Emergency Mobile Response Teams.
  • 1,932 individuals were screened at our Crisis Stabilization unit (C.S.U).
  • 712 individuals representing 6,547 total inpatient days were admitted and received short-term, intensive in-patient treatment and stabilization at our C.S.U.
  • 546 adults were housed at Henderson’s Housing Treatment Facilities that provide individuals with needed supports to achieve the goal of independent living.
  • 20 boys (11-18 years) who are in the foster care system were housed in one of Henderson’s Group Home. Each home houses six youth, and is a long-term program where most youth will reach the age of 18 before moving on to independent  living.
  • 353 homeless individuals received homeless services from our Homeless Outreach team.

  • 95% of our clients responded that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the services they received at Henderson.

  • 96% responded that they functioned better as a result of receiving services at Henderson.
  • The American Safety and Health Institute – as the official training center in Broward County, Henderson Mental Health Center trained 783 mental health providers in important areas such as Domestic Violence, HIV/AIDS and Safety and Security.
  • National Research: In 2006, HMHC was selected as one of only 20 sites for a Mental Health Treatment Study sponsored by the Social Security Administration.  Henderson was selected for the study on the basis of its historical performance with evidence-based supported employment.   The 4-year study will be concluding in July 2010, and has been examining the value of eliminating disincentives from the workplace, establishing an accurate diagnosis and delivering appropriate mental health and employment supports for study participants. Outcomes being assessed include employment, health and mental status, quality of life, functioning, and clinical recovery. Study participants were selected from Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries and have a primary impairment of schizophrenia or affective disorder.  Westat, an employee-owned research corporation based in Rockville, MD, is conducting the study along with Dartmouth University, the University of Texas, the University of Maryland at Baltimore County and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
  • In January, 2010, Henderson Mental Health Center was selected as one of thirty leading behavioral healthcare organizations, nationally, for participation in a new National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded research study. The program is led by Dr. John Kane at the Zucker Hillside Hospital in New York and colleagues from Dartmouth Medical School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Yale Medical School, University of Calgary, UCLA, and SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
  • Henderson Mental Health Center received recognition from several different sources, including:

 

* Received the highest Level of Accreditation: (three years) from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (C.A.R.F).

* Crystal Award as a finalist for the “10th Annual NSU Student Life Achievement Awards – Corporate Partner of the Year”.

*Henderson Mental Health received the Gold recognition for the American Heart Association’s Fit Friendly Company award.

* Florida Department of Children and Families and The Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association presented Henderson Mental Health Center’s BRIDGE Project with the “Substance Abuse Services Best Practices Award”.

*Henderson Mental Health Center was the recipient of The Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, second annual “2010 South Florida Worksite Wellness Forum and Award” in the mid-sized category winner – businesses with 500 to 1,000 employees.

* Trahern LaFavor was awarded the "Sustained Excellence Award" at the MST International Conference.  This award is based on outcomes.  The family was asked to rate the therapist on 28 items, including how the family feels the therapist is making changes in their interactions, building on their strengths, etc.  The required minimum adherence score 61%.  Trahern's level of adherence has consistently been at 75% for over one year.

* Dean Mynks, Henderson’s Director of Case Management, was honored by the Mental Health Association of Broward County as an EPIC Award recipient for his work on behalf of adults with a mental illness.
